From “Notes from Prison - 1983-1988″ By Alija Izetbegović

“Two truths; a poet’s and a scientist’s. To a poet, stars are either twinkling and sad, or they look at us from the skies and tell us about eternity; the moon is the light of heaven and the lovers’ friend; a brook murmurs and tells a story, an old oak hides secrets; the skies smile or thunder with rage, and mountaintops reflect in the big blue sky and tell of the eternity of nature and the transience of all things human, etc. Science sees things quite differently. For science, nature is detached and the universe is blank and everything in it is just a game of blind and impersonal forces. The moon is a plain, cold planet that has been moving in the dark of space for millions of years, with no known or comprehensible purpose. We would learn so much about ourselves if we were able to say with certainty which held more truth to us and which was closer: the untruth of the poet or the truth of the scientist. This is, perhaps, where the answer is to who we are and where we are from, in fact, the answer about our nature and our origin.”

“Two men are gambling on the sinking Titanic. One of them is cheating. Many people resemble these two in real life.”

“There are paradoxes. If there were no night, we would be deprived of the magnificent image of a starry sky. Thus light deprives us of “vision,” and darkness helps us “see.”

“Man is born in blood, pain and scream, the first thing heard is crying, the birth is not exactly a natural act, it is painful, almost cruel. Does this not say something about the very life that has just been created?”

“True love only chooses to reside in a noble heart. Selfish hearts cannot love”

“A toothache hurts, stupidity does not. A hollow head does not hurt the way a hollow tooth does. It is just damaging, but one does not die of stupidity.”

“Is there anything more beautiful than a rainbow? But the man who is inside it, cannot see it”

“We seek freedom, but are we worthy of it?”

“The closer you are to the stars, the closer you are to their destiny: loneliness, distance and cold.”

“Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde, Omer and Merima, Layla and Marjoun, all love each other. And we love them. We love them because they love each other. We love them although we do not know them. What follows is: We do not love them, in fact, we love love.”

“If there is no God, there is no man. If there is no man, there is no responsibility. If there is no responsibility, there is no crime. If there is no God, there is no crime. If there is no God, all is permitted”

On Qaradawi’s Statement

Shiite’s are ‘invading’ Sunni societies: Qaradawi

Prominent Sunni Muslim religious commentator Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi charged on Thursday that Shiite Muslims are “invading” Sunni societies.

“I stick to what I have said about an attempted Shiite invasion of Sunni societies,” the Egyptian-born cleric, who is based in Qatar, said in a statement …. read more

In my opinion..

We need to learn how to coexist with others whose beliefs are different from ours. When we read about Islamic history, we find that people from other religions lived under Islamic rule. And they had their rights and were free to practice their religions . They lived peacefully with Muslims because in Islam, there is no compulsion in religion and Allah forbids attacking and injustice.

So there must be tolerance. And by saying tolerance, it does not mean I approve of unbelief and accept it. But as long as non-Muslims (and also heterodox Muslim sects) do not attack us, then why the hostility ?Besides, showing tolerance will help us teach them about Islam . Allah says in the holy Quran “Invite (mankind, O Muhammad SAW) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qu’ran) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better” If we show hostility towards them, then how do we expect them to learn about Islam?

In that report, Sheikh al Qardawi warns of Shiites invading sunnie societies. He has the right to warn of those who may harm Islam and Muslims. But of course, it does not mean we show hostility . It’s just one must be careful . But I remember he said in the past that Iran had the right to have nuclear power and that we Muslims must defend it. I’m sure many agreed on what he said about that because the Iranian government is fighting for Muslims and defending their lands. This is what the media says. But reading about their history with Sunnies, and knowing their beliefs make it clear that they are not really fighting for us. And not everything is as it seems in the media.

The Iranian government wants to control the Muslim world. They want to control Makkah and Madinah. Actually they tried in the past to destroy the holy mosque in makkah in 1986 during Hajj which caused many deaths . And they also try to turn Shiites living in Arab countries against their governments.

There is also hizboAllah supported by the Iranian government who many Sunnies hail as good mujahideen not knowing that hizboAllah was originally part of amal movement which abused and killed the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon during the Lebanese civil war.

Anyway, whatever Iran and HizboAllah claim, we must be careful and not let emotions cloud our judgment. We don’t want to be naïve and think their intention is really good. Also , we don’t want to be negative , generalize and attack all Shiites. We need to distinguish between politics and people.

Salam!
